Building in 2026? Start with the current California codes
An older design or estimate may need another look before you submit it for approval.
Effective January 1, 2026
The edition name and start date are different
California’s 2025 Building Standards Code took effect on January 1, 2026. The year in the title is the edition year; it does not mean the rules started applying in 2025. The statewide collection covers subjects such as building safety, electrical work, plumbing, energy, and green building.
Your project type changes the review
A new single-family house, a detached ADU, and a restaurant build-out do not all use the same design checklist. A restaurant, for example, needs a team that understands commercial spaces rather than assuming a residential approach will transfer.
Before reusing plans, ask your designer which code edition and local amendments the building department will apply. For an application already in progress, ask the department how its transition rules affect that specific file. Do not assume an older drawing date settles the question.
Make the estimate match the submitted plans
Give bidding contractors the same current drawing set. Ask each to identify the version used for pricing, including the engineering and equipment schedules. This makes it easier to spot a quote based on superseded plans.
Keep a short revision record as the design develops. If a review comment changes materials or construction details, have the designer explain the change and request an updated price before approving the work.
